Sun has produced a CD containing some freeware for Solaris 8 on SPARC and Intel. I have placed these files in a .tar.gz file on the sunfreeware.com archive in:

Extra Software CD October 1st, 1999 This Extra Software CD-ROM will be a collection of useful and popular software for use in conjunction with the Solaris Operating Environment and will be available for both the SPARC and Intel architectures. This software will consist of many public domain or freely available programs including utilities, productivity and development tools and much more. Currently the contents of the 'Extra Software' CD-ROM are in development and a full complement of software will be available at time of official release of the Solaris 8 Operating Environment. Available now in Early Access are the first samples. The software on this CD-ROM will be offered to you for free as a convenience as it may complement your Solaris Operating Environment. For the file here, put the ExtraSoftwareCD.tar.gz file in some directory on your system and do:
gunzip ExtraSoftwareCD.tar.gz
tar xvf ExtraSoftwareCD.tar
to get the files and directories:
components volstart
README installer
and then run ./installer and follow the instructions.
Many of these programs are also in sunfreeware.com in pkgadd form.
